Immigration and Naturalization
by admin - October 19th, 2012
This week is all about immigration and naturalization, especially at how ideas of race and preference have been encoded into law and practice for voluntary immigrants. Photo: women and children waiting at Angel Island in San Francisco, courtesy of the California Historical Society.
Monday 10/22 – Immigration Law. Reading: Ngai, "Architecture of Race" (PDF). Please be prepared to TELL a true story of an immigrant in class. It can be you, someone in your family or ancestry, or any other real person from the present or past.

Wednesday 10/24 – Naturalization. No reading, we will screen the film Citizen USA in class. The original syllabus had us going to a naturalization ceremony in Worcester but it turns out that won’t work, so we will view the film instead.
