Remember <strong>you have 25 days<\/strong> from handing in your final draft to handing in a revised draft. As we turn to some of the scholarship and sources around McCarthyism &#8211; a key part of the 1950s, and one that (as it turns out) no one is directly addressing in their research &#8211; pay particular attention to technique, method and writing style.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/literatum\/publisher\/jstor\/books\/content\/books\/2005\/dohe12952\/dohe12952\/20130502\/dohe12952.cover.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"226\" \/>Our first major reading is an entire monograph* written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/facultyguide\/person.html?emplid=0adcef42793cb212c9d013f9b84de92bfbcf6972\">Thomas Doherty<\/a>, a media and cultural historian at Brandeis University with whom I worked closely during my graduate studies. His book, <em>Cold War, Cool Medium<\/em> looks at television during the McCarthy era. Read <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not just for the content<\/span> but for how Doherty constructs his argument, how he uses evidence, and what writerly techniques he uses to tell this compelling story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mon 11\/11<\/strong> &#8211;<em> No classes, Veteran&#8217;s Day<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Wed 11\/13<\/strong> Read up to page 160 (chapters 1-7). By this point you should have read up through Storey&#8217;s Chapter 9, incorporating his advice into your writing and revision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wed 11\/27<\/strong> &#8211; <em>No class, Thanksgiving holiday<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mon 12\/2 Revised Draft is due<\/strong> back by classtime, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>sent electronically as a Word or PDF document<\/strong><\/span>. Film Day: screening of <em>On the Waterfront<\/em>, which deals indirectly with McCarthyism and blacklisting and which won 8 Oscars in 1954 (including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, and Screenplay).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wed 12\/4<\/strong> &#8211; by mutual agreement this will be a History Portfolio workshop in class, please bring laptops with you. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Mon 12\/9<\/strong> Last day of class.
